Rackley Building Renovations

The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA

Over a period of five years, HPArchitects has assisted the College of Education with the phased renovation of the 37,000 square foot classroom and office building.  HPA has worked closely with the College to identify and evaluate current and future needs within a floor for each respective College department.  Each phase of the renovation has included a feasibility study and cost estimate concurrent with the development of the conceptual design.  HPA developed an overall building circulation concept utilizing a hierarchy of public and private spaces.  High-demand classrooms are relocated primarily to the first floor, and semi-permanent and flexible department research spaces are provided at the second floor.  The third and fourth floors house permanent office suites for the administrative departments of the College.  A concept of office suites was introduced at the upper floors to optimize space formerly utilized solely for corridor circulation.  Perimeter offices with "borrowed light" partition walls provide natural day-lighting to interior office functions.
